In 2020, Hop on the bus in NYC with Cheese Journeys as we travel to Vermont! This tour is designed for artisan cheese and beverage professionals to give you VIP access, to some of the world’s best producers in NYC and Vermont while forming valuable connections with colleagues and industry professionals. Enjoy 6 days with Anna Juhl and her co-hosts: cheese and cocktail educator and author Tenaya Darlington (aka Madame Fromage), Vermont local food expert Jeff Roberts.
The tour begins in the bustling metropolis of New York City, with an exclusive introduction to two of the best cheese counters in the world: Eataly and Murray’s Cheese. Enjoy tastings and a guided tour of Murray’s cheese aging caves. We’ll meet up with friends at Brooklyn Brewery, Jasper Hill, Shelburne Farms, Vermont Creamery, Von Trapp Creamery & Brewery, Hill Farms Brewery and more!
The itinerary is outlined below. However, we reserve the right to substitute an event if needed. Day 1 - Wednesday, May 27
We begin our trip with a food tour extravaganza! Starting at Eataly in Manhattan, we work our way to Greenwich Village's Murray’s Cheese for an overview of Vermont Cheeses and then on to a tour of their aging caves. Looking for refreshment, we head to Brooklyn Brewery for a cheese and beer tasting and dinner. Staying in New York City for night, we head north to the Green Mountain state the following morning.
Day 2 - Thursday, May 28
After an early start, we arrive at the amazing Inn at Shelburne Farms. This beautiful, historic Inn, originally the 19th-century country home of Dr. William Seward and Lila Vanderbilt Webb, will be our home for the next 4 nights.
We kick off the Vermont segment of our trip with a VIP tour of Shelburne Farms. Our guide will be Marshall Webb, the farm’s Woodlands Manager. Along with a visit to the cheesemaking facility and a tasting of Shelburne's cheeses, we'll tour the farm’s grounds, garden, and historic buildings, and walk the pastures with the cows and dairy manager Sam Dixon. Enjoy cocktails at the end of the day with Tenaya and a beautiful welcome dinner at the Inn as you unwind and slip into the Vermont pace of life.

Day 3 - Friday, May 29
After breakfast, we set off for Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom to visit Jasper Hill Farm and Cellars for a guided tour and lunch with owners Andy and Mateo Kehler. Lunch is across the road featuring the internationally-renowned Hill Farmstead Brewery. We then stop at Jasper Hill Farm's Randi Albert Calderwood Cropping Center: the farm's state-of-the-art hay drying facility, which allows them to produce much of their herd's own feed and helps the cheese maintain a true taste of Jasper Hill's terroir. On our way back to the Inn, we'll have a chance to stop at Caledonia Spirits' new production distillery to taste one of Tenaya and Anna's favorites - the award-winning Barr Hill Gin! Dinner at the Inn at Shelburne Farms.
Day 4 - Saturday, May 30
The day begins at the Burlington Farmers Market, where we'll embark on a walking tour in search of some of Vermont’s best produce, meats, baked goods, wine, and cider. We’ll meet up with several cheesemakers, veggie fermenters and local artists selling direct at the market. We’ll drop into Mad River Distillers, then head to Dedalus Wine Shop, Market, and Wine Bar on Pine Street for a tasting and lunch. Afterwards, we'll tour Lake Champlain Chocolates, and enjoy some free time to explore the Pine Street area - a great downtown neighborhood with breweries (Queen City & Zero Gravity), cideries (Citizen Cider), and art studios. The evening is free for guests to have dinner at a Burlington restaurant of their choice, before returning to the Inn at Shelburne Farms.
Day 5 - Sunday, May 31
Spend a relaxing day at the Inn! Take a dip in Lake Champlain, explore the Shelburne barns, and visit the award-winning Shelburne Vineyard. Maybe head to Folino’s Pizza for lunch, or pack a cheese and wine picnic and explore some of the 10 miles of walking trails on this vast property. Spend the afternoon reading a book on the patio overlooking the estate's formal gardens, try your hand at a game of bocce ball or croquet, or take a canoe or kayak out on the lake.
We'll regroup in the evening for an educational dinner program with special guests: a number of accomplished VT cheesemakers - including respected farmstead cheese consultant Peter Dixon and his wife Rachel, the cheesemakers and owners of Parish Hill Creamery.
Day 6 - Monday, June 1
Our final day is a packed one! We'll begin with beer and cheesemaking with the von Trapp family (yes, of The Sound of Music fame!). Learn about the family's history during our visit to von Trapp Farmstead, and enjoy lunch in the Bierhal at von Trapp Brewing. We'll taste through their lauded lagers and artisan cheeses. Finally, to cap off our tour of Vermont's cheese landscape, we head to the multi-award winning Vermont Creamery, pioneers of the American goat cheese industry. After a guided tour, cheese tasting, and a stop for dinner, we hop back on the bus for our return journey to New York City.
Lodging for 5 nights, breakfast 5 mornings, 5 lunches and 5 evening meals (including alcoholic beverages served with meals). All expenses related to classes and/or tours provided by chefs, guest cheese and beverage experts and hosts. Round trip transportation to and from New York City to Vermont, and all transportation during the trip is included.
What's Not Included
Round trip transportation/airfare to New York City. Personal shopping at food markets, stores and farms. Specific alcoholic beverages other than those served at meals and tasting events can be purchased separately.
